The working poor in America
Yesteryear
There was a time in America when one person – even without a high school education – could work 40 hours a week and support a family of four. That included buying a home, having money to put aside for emergencies, and having “extra” money for things like vacations.
At age 60, the worker could retire with a pension from the employer. At age 65 and a half, the worker could also get full Social Security retirement benefits.
Today
Today, a person without a college degree is lucky if s/he can get 40 hours of work per week. If s/he can, the wages barely cover rent and utilities.
Forget decent food or living in a decent neighborhood.
Forget “luxuries” like buying a home and having an emergency fund.
Forget pensions from employers. And, if you were born after 1961, forget getting full retirement benefits from Social Security until you’re age 67.
A fair day’s wage for a fair day’s work.
For typical blue collar workers, the time of “a fair day’s wage for a fair day’s work” is over. And it’s never coming back.
The working poor:
percentage of minimum wage workers living in poverty
According to a report published by the U.S. Department of Labor in July, 2018 (linked at end of page) these people in the work force in 2016 were all “working poor”;
1.4% of those with “a bachelor’s degree or higher”,
5.1% of those with “some college or an associate’s degree”,
6.9% of high school graduates: and
13.7% of those with “less than a high school diploma”.
I doubt the percentage of minimum wage workers living in poverty has decreased substantially since 2016. In fact, as outsourcing and automation continue to increase, I expect there to be fewer and fewer minimum wage and blue collar jobs available.
The solution seems obvious.
As you can see in the percentages above, the higher one’s education, the less likely s/he is to be unemployed. So, higher education must be the solution for low-wage workers. Right?
Wrong! In reality, this “solution” is impossible for many of the working poor: they don’t have enough time or money to pursue higher education.
Even when the education is free, as with GED classes and college attended on scholarship, there are still out-of-pocket costs involved. Plus, when you’re working a typical low-wage job, you don’t have the freedom to schedule your work hours around your class schedule.
Even when all the classes can be taken online, earning a degree from an accredited college requires taking some classes that will be of little practical use to the worker. And, for online classes, there are mandatory requirements for “interacting” with fellow classmates as well. Both requirements demand time the worker doesn’t have.
Trade school? Unaccredited school?
Trade school is a great option but, because of the hands-on nature of the classes, it must be attended in person.
“Degrees” from unaccredited schools impress no one – certainly not prospective employers.
But, even without a higher education there is hope – a way for low-wage workers to permanently break free from the vicious cycle of poverty.
The American dream is battered and bruised, but it isn’t dead.
Never again – barring some catastrophic event that kills off half the work force – will workers be able to reach the American dream by working a typical blue collar job.
But the American dream is still within reach.
